
Thassos is a beautiful island in Macedonia, located in the northern Aegean Sea. It lies just a few kilometers from Kavala and is the northernmost Greek island.
It is often called the “Emerald of the Aegean” because of its rich green landscape and natural beauty.
The island has a coastline of about 115 km and covers an area of 378.84 km². It is only 12 nautical miles from Kavala and just 6 miles from Keramoti and Kavala Airport.
Thassos belongs to the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. Together with nearby islets, it forms a single municipality and regional unit.
The capital of the island is Limenas. However, it is often confused with Limenaria, which is the second largest town.
Thassos is a very green island. Pine forests, olive trees, plane trees, firs, and many other species cover most of its landscape. As a result, it offers a unique natural environment.
The local economy is based on several activities. These include tourism, marble mining, olive oil production, honey, and timber.
According to the 2021 census, the island has a population of 13,104 residents.
